In the 15th century Yemen was the world's leading exporter of coffee. The drink, founded by the Saint Ali Ben Omar as-Shadhili, of which he is the patron saint, was regularly used by Sufis in gatherings of knowledge and remembrance. They believed that coffee was a sacred drink, a spiritual tool to bring one closer to knowing God, the Real. Today, Yemen accounts for less than 1% of global coffee production, making Yemeni coffee the rarest and most sought after coffee in the world.
